Series; The Sixty-odd Provinces of Great Japan, circa 1845

Iga Province: Karaki Masaemon - Terrific portrait of the master swordsman Karaki Masaemon, who assisted his brother-in-law, Shizuma, in avenging his father's death. The pair attacked the murderer Kawai Matagoro as he traveled through Iga Pass, killing the villain and achieving vengeance. The fearless Masaemon is shown resting his knee atop an opponent as he wields two swords simultaneously, slicing through an arrow with one blade while countering a spear blow with another. The inset at upper left shows Kawai Matagoro on horseback at Iga Pass, firing an arrow at his attackers. A great design, beautifully detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
