Silkworm Cultivation, 1867

Comments - Wonderful triptych showing Prince Genji assisting beauties engaged in the process of raising silkworms. At right, the nobleman uses a feather to gently brush the eggs from a sheet of paper. Below him, a woman and young girl look over the tiny silkworms on a large wicker tray. In the center, a beauty kneels next to a low table, chopping mulberry leaves to feed the insects. At lower left, women collect the cocoons, piling them into baskets. Behind them, a beauty sits outside boiling the cocoons to release the silk thread. A great look at this traditional activity, with an attractive setting and vibrant color.
