Comments - Dramatic scene from the Sino-Japanese War of troops battling with the enemy in close contact. In the center, a Chinese horseman clashes swords with a Japanese officer on horseback. Below him, Meiji troops spring forward on foot to attack the enemy, one soldier even pulling a Chinese man backwards by his long pigtail. Clouds of smoke fill the air, and a few explosions can be seen in the sky at left as flags flutter above the scene. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and soft shading in the clouds and sky. A lively image filled with energy and action.
