Original Tokushi Katsuhira (1904 - 1971) Japanese Woodblock Print
Elm Tree at the River's Edge

Series; The Elm Tree Story, 1942

Tokushi Katsuhira - Born in Akita, Tokushi Katsuhira was completely self-taught as an artist. From a family of farmers and papermakers, Katsuhira carved dolls but had never even seen another artist at work until he took a short woodcarving class in 1928. He began exhibiting his sosaku hanga prints in 1928 with Nihon Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai. His subjects primarily deal with life and customs in Akita, including festivals and the seasonal activities of rural life. His prints have a charming simplicity and directness, and he was known for the quality of his carving.

The Elm Tree Story - Released in 1942, Katsuhira's "The Elm Tree Story" comprises 56 black and white woodblock prints depicting life in Akita, with an elm tree featuring prominently in many of the designs throughout the series. Works by Tokushi Katsuhira are rarely seen in the market, and these handsome designs are from a major series by the artist. A great choice for a collector interested in sosaku hanga prints.
