Ashikaga Yoshinori Defeated at Akamatsu Man'yu's Palace, circa 1848

Comments - Fantastic scene of a battle taking place in the courtyard of Akamatsu Man'yu's beautiful palace, where Ashikaga Yoshinori will be defeated. Attackers stream through the gateway at left into the walled complex, charging ahead on foot, wielding swords and spears. Guards and retainers rush out of the building to meet the enemy as a nobleman fires arrows from the verandah. Attendants kneeling next to him hold arrows and a naginata at the ready. Another warrior with his foot atop the verandah railing thrusts his spear into an opponent below. A terrific samurai subject with wonderful action and fine detail in the architecture.
