Chinese Admiral Ding Ruchang about to Commit Suicide after Surrendering to Japanese Forces, 1895

Comments - Intriguing triptych from the Sino-Japanese War showing Admiral Ding Ruchang, the leader of the Chinese Peiyang or Northern Fleet during the naval Battle of Weihaiwei. After his defeat in this important battle, the admiral committed suicide by taking an overdose of opium in his office at his Liugong Island headquarters. Here, he surveys his final message with a heavy heart before passing it onto a waiting servant for delivery. His honorable manner of death was admired by both Chinese and Japanese officers. A moving image from this historic conflict, with wonderful detail in the interior setting.

Image Size - 14" x 27 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight soiling and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
