Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Tokijiro Rescuing Urazato

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the young man Tokijiro rescuing his lover, the Yoshiwara courtesan Urazato. The beauty's employer tied her up in the snowy courtyard and beat her after discovering her affair with the young man. The poor beauty kneels in the snow as the employer's wife raises a bamboo stick overhead to strike her. The couple's daughter Midori tries to prevent the elderly woman from hitting her mother, raising her hand to intervene. Tokijiro climbs down the fence at left, his sword hanging from a tie clenched between his teeth. A great illustration from this famous tale, with large colorful characters and a nicely detailed setting. Includes embossing in the white kimono trim and burnishing in the black obi and black collars, and fence.
