To Ransen

Series; Stories of Famous Japanese Women

Stories of Famous Japanese Women - In 1893, Chikanobu began work on a series of diptychs depicting scenes from the lives of famous Japanese women. His "Stories of Famous Japanese Women" included women from various time periods as well as mythological heroines, highlighting their dramatic deeds or personal virtues. These intriguing subjects are beautifully drawn with Chikanobu's characteristic fine line work, and lovely soft shading. A rare and wonderful series and a great choice for a collector.

To Ransen - Terrific image of To Ransen, a beauty who obtained the magic of the immortals through her pure heart. She was supposedly able to float on clouds and ride dragons. She appears here gliding on swirling clouds above the sea, holding a rugged staff like that carried by the immortals. The travelers on the shore below are surprised by the sight, a small boy pointing excitedly. A woman in a traveling veil follows nearby, holding her veil aside as she watches the lovely apparition. A fantastic design, beautifully drawn with graceful flowing lines and a terrific natural setting, and detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim. Would make a striking display.
