Series; Stories of Famous Japanese Women

Stories of Famous Japanese Women - In 1893, Chikanobu began work on a series of diptychs depicting scenes from the lives of famous Japanese women. His "Stories of Famous Japanese Women" included women from various time periods as well as mythological heroines, highlighting their dramatic deeds or personal virtues. These intriguing subjects are beautifully drawn with Chikanobu's characteristic fine line work, and lovely soft shading. A rare and wonderful series and a great choice for a collector.

Yokobue - Lovely image of the beautiful servant Yokobue, who fell in love with Saito Tokiyori, who wanted to marry her. Tokiyori's father wanted his son to marry someone of a higher class, though, so Tokiyori became a monk instead. The beauty searched for him, finally arriving at a secluded hermitage, asking for him by name. He asked a priest to tell her that no one was there by that name, as he had taken a new name upon taking vows. She left, saddened and grieved, but became a nun to follow in his example. Here, Yokobue stands shyly at the garden gate, anxiously biting the sleeve of her purple kimono, a full moon glowing overhead. At right, Tokiyori watches her solemnly from a shoji window, his mouth set as he hardens himself to life without his sweetheart. A beautiful design, detailed with burnishing in the black hat, and embossing in the Tokiyori's robe and the beauty's white kimono trim.
