Series; Stories of Famous Japanese Women

Stories of Famous Japanese Women - In 1893, Chikanobu began work on a series of diptychs depicting scenes from the lives of famous Japanese women. His "Stories of Famous Japanese Women" included women from various time periods as well as mythological heroines, highlighting their dramatic deeds or personal virtues. These intriguing subjects are beautifully drawn with Chikanobu's characteristic fine line work, and lovely soft shading. A rare and wonderful series and a great choice for a collector.

Wife of Shimizu, Governor of Kazusa, 1893 - Dramatic view of Shimizu, the wife of the governor of Kazusa, heroically rescuing an ox from plunging off a mountain path. The ox was carrying large bails of rice when it lost its footing, and Shimizu leaped into action, grabbing the ox and wrestling it back onto the path. She is shown pulling the animal back with all her strength as the astonished herd boy and a fellow traveler watch helplessly. A lively image with a dynamic composition. A great scene from this unusual series.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two attached panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, a few small spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
