Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and his men at the mountain lair of the terrible demon, Shuten-doji. Disguised as traveling monks, Raiko and his retainers traveled to the monster's hideout on Mt. Oe to rescue the young beauties he had kidnapped. They are shown here enjoying a banquet, plying Shuten-doji with sake to put him into a drunken stupor. He reclines against an armrest at upper left, holding an enormous red lacquer cup full of sake. In the center, Raiko performs a dance, lifting one leg and waving a fan. Behind him, a beauty sits with several red and green horned demons that grimace and leer. Other women wait on the verandah outside at right, wistfully looking out at the mountainous landscape. A terrific subject from this great legend, with wonderful detail and expressive figures.
