Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
At a Minamoto Encampment, 1885

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene depicting samurai gathered at a Minamoto encampment along the shore. In the center, a samurai presents cylindrical container in his outstretched hands, of the type usually used to hold the severed heads of enemies for identification. The mustached warrior at right looks ahead with a solemn expression, a folding fan in his hand, the famous woman warrior Tomoe gozen sitting at his side. Cloth panels featuring the paulownia crest of the Minamoto Clan are hung behind the figures, with a pine tree framing the deep red sky above. From left, the actors are Nakamura Sojuro I Ichikawa Kodanji V, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Nakamura Fukusuke IV. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, burnishing on the armor and folding fan, and embossing in the cloth panels.
