Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Enemy Approaching by Sea, 1888

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych of the young warrior Hachiro Tametomo at far right and his companions alerted to the approach of an enemy arriving by sea. In the center the old man Oniyasha, shown with horns on his head and flowing gray hair and beard, raises his hand above his head as he scans the horizon, scowling angrily. The beauty carries a naginata, her young daughter and son accompanying her. From left, the adult actors are Nakamura Fukusuke IV, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Ichikawa Danjuro. A fantastic scene with excellent detail and vibrant color, including burnishing in the beauty's black obi.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 14" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Small tear at edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, light ink offsetting, faint rippling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
