Nakamura Fukusuke I as both a Boatman and a Yakko, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki print featuring Nakamura Fukusuke I in duel roles as both a boatman and a yakko or footman bearing a processional standard. As the yakko, he hops on one foot as he holds the fringed standard, leaning forward with a frown. He wears a black kimono with a bold pattern, tucked up at the back for easier movement, the yellow fringe of his red under robe swinging as he moves. A furry tobacco pouch with an owl's face hangs at his waist. The boatman pushes up his hat for a better look, grinning as he does so. A straw raincoat covers his tie-dyed blue shirt, and a yellow and blue striped sail billows out with wind. An intriguing design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
