The Battle of Katsushika, from the Book The Eight Dogs of Satomi, 1868

Comments - Terrific depiction of the Battle of Katsushika from the epic novel "The Eight Dogs of Satomi," a tale about eight samurai who were the offspring of a mystical union between Princess Fuse and a dog. Here, warriors battle atop a plateau overlooking the water, with flames and smoke billowing from the buildings on fire below. In the center, enemies clash with sword and spear, while more troops rush forward at left to join the fray. At lower left, two dying samurai collapse on the ground, bleeding heavily from their wounds. At top center, the fighting continues along the shore with tiny figures seen in dark silhouette, while in the distance at upper left, banners and pennants fluttering above the treetops signal the approach of additional samurai. A lively design filled with action, nicely detailed.
