Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from the Tale of Genji

Comments - Handsome scene from the "Tale of Genji" of Prince Genji leaning against a palanquin at right as two beauties escort a young boy toward the home at left. The youth walks forward with an eager smile. A matron stands in the doorway at left, an attendant beside her holding a lidded wooden pail. Gourds and vines cover the garden fence in the center, with a willow tree at right. Clouds in purple and edged with red frame the scene, with a yellow border dotted with confetti-like shapes. An interesting subject with attractive color.
