Parody of Brave Women Warriors, 1884

Comments - Great kabuki group portrait featuring actors as women known for their bravery. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Tomoe gozen, Nakamura Shikan IV as Hangaku, Suketakaya Kosuke IV as Shizuka gozen, and Ichikawa Sadanji I as Oiko. At top left, the famous woman warrior Tomoe gozen puts on a violet floral print kimono over a suit of armor, a white sash tied around her forehead. At top right, the beautiful shirabyoshi dancer and mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Shizuka gozen, strikes a graceful pose, holding one sleeve up and waving a fan. These wonderfully detailed figures are set off by a striking red textile patterned background. A handsome design, nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono.
