Original Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sino-Japanese War Battle

Comments - Lively scene of a battle during the Sino-Japanese War of fighting at close quarters. At right, a Chinese officer on horseback thrusts his sword upwards to rally his men, some of whom have already turned to retreat. In the center, a Japanese soldier grips a fallen enemy by the throat, brandishing his sword at him. A shell explodes overhead and orange smoke drifts across the night sky, a Chinese fortress seen dimly in the distance. A dramatic design, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms.
