Series; Portraits on Sake Cups for the First Year of the Ansei Era

Portraits on Sake Cups for the First Year of the Ansei Era - Terrific design from a fine Kunisada III series featuring kabuki actor portraits as reflected in red lacquer sake cups. The portraits are beautifully drawn with fine line work and expressive faces, set off by the vibrant red of the cup. Japanese maple leaves and curving sweeps of softly shaded blue in the background suggest autumn breezes, with embossed lines indicating the direction of the wind. The background features a scattering of confetti-like shapes. Some designs include deluxe treatments such as burnishing or additional embossing. A striking format from a rarely seen series. A great choice for a kabuki enthusiast.
