Enemies Meeting in the Yoshiwara, 1864

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Sato Tsubame Sugata no Inazuma" of the enemies Nagoya Sanza Motoharu and Fuwa Banzaemon Shigekatsu accidentally bumping into each other in the Yoshiwara one night. Sanza's clan banished him after Banzaemon stole a precious scroll in Sanza's care. At left, Sanza watches his enemy suspiciously out of the corners of his eyes as he grips his sword. At right, Banzaemon glares back at his weapon upright. His black kimono features a bold design of swirling clouds and lightning bolts, while Sanza wears a blue robe patterned with birds in flight and raindrops. A curtain shaded from blue to green with a design of crests hangs in the background. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo V, Iwai Shijaku II, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. Nicely detailed.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small loss at edge, a few holes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight soiling, wrinkling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
