Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of a battle at Kagoshima. In the center, a Japanese soldier on horseback gallops into the midst of the rebels, waving his sword high. At lower right, two samurai load a cannon, while above, the rebel leader, Saigo Takamori, watches from astride a brown horse. At lower left, rebels armed with swords meet Japanese troops carrying guns with bayonets fixed. On the mountainside above, soldiers shoot at samurai above, a fallen warrior draped over the rocks. An action-filled image, detailed with burnishing in the cannon and uniforms and fine bokashi shading in the smoke and background.
