Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Saigo Takamori with Good and Evil Inside

Comments - Incredible portrait of the Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. This fascinating print features a view of the internal arguments taking place between good and evil, represented by small figures with heads bearing the kanji for good or evil. The evil figures have red heads, and are shown fighting and pulling strings attached to men. The good characters with yellow heads battle with evil and urge Saigo to good and honorable behavior. Saigo wears a military uniform consisting of a purple jacket with braided trim, fringed epaulets, and red lapels, white pants, and a hat trimmed with feathers resting across his lap. A fantastic and imaginative depiction of this great leader, wonderfully detailed. We've never seen this subject before. A great choice for a collector interested in samurai history or the Satsuma Rebellion.
