Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Referee and Angry Wrestlers

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play from a drama about two rival sumo wrestlers. At left, Onigadake Doemon grimaces with rage as he looks down, a folding fan in one hand and a black robe draped over his back. His kimono features a bold pattern of sacred shimenawa ropes. In the center, a sumo referee scowls at him as he pulls a coat over his shoulders. At right, the young Akitsushima Kuniemon stares to the side with eyes wide, grasping the plaid kimono draped over his shoulder with both hands. The large bulky figures of the athletes contrast with the slim frame of the referee. Nice expressive characters.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 28 1/2"
