Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lovers Separated by a River, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Lovely illustration from the kabuki play "Imoseyama onna teikin," which tells the story of a young couple who fall in love, unaware that their families are bitter rivals. Each family owns an estate on opposite sides of the Yoshino River, which rushes through the center of the scene. The beauty Hinadori kneels at left with a small court doll in her hand, smiling happily as she looks up at her mother, Sadataka. Her kimono is patterned with cherry blossoms and dolls (hina), a pun on her name, the flowing sleeves trimmed with bows and tassels. On the opposite bank at right, the young nobleman Koganosuke frowns as he receives a lecture from this father, the stern Daihanji. Blossoming cherry trees frame scene above. Small paper slips with writing on them have been attached next to the name cartouches. An attractive design with a handsome setting.
