Sumo Wrestlers Fighting, 1850

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Sekitori Nidai no Shobuzuke" of two sumo wrestlers arguing, with a referee standing on an overturned bench between them that has trapped the blades of their swords. At left, Onigadake Doemon grimaces with rage, dressed in a striking kimono patterned with images of the Raijin, the thunder god. At right, Akitsushima Kuniemon frowns unhappily as he looks away. One sleeve of his dragonfly print robe is pushed down to the waist to reveal a red and white kimono with trailing blossoms. Small paper slips with writing on them have been attached next to the name cartouches. The actors include Seki Sanjuro III as the referee and Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Kuniemon. An interesting design with fine detail in the hair and handsome wood grain impression in the background.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 28 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A couple holes, repaired. Soiling, slight toning and creasing, rubbing at edges, curling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
