Series; Seven Views of Fuji from the Eastern Capital in Iroha Order, 1852

The Syllable Ko: Arashi Kichisaburo III as the Sumo Wrestler Inuta Kobungo Yasuyori - Great kabuki portrait of Kichisaburo III as the sumo wrestler Inuta Kobungo Yasuyori in a play based on the novel "The Eight Dog Heroes of the Satomi Clan of Nanso" (Nanso Satomi Hakkenden). He grimaces with rage as he stares ahead, his arms folded firmly across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his boldly checked kimono. A sword is tucked at his side, and his hair is pulled into a thick knot at the back of his head. The inset at upper left depicts Mt. Fuji at sunset seen from a tea stand. White clouds drift across the sky, which is shaded with warm golden yellow and a red glow along the horizon. A terrific image from this rarely seen Kuniyoshi series, nicely composed and detailed with fine line work in the hair.
