Original Bertha Lum (1869 - 1954) Japanese Woodblock Print
Dragon Well, 1924

Bertha Lum - American artist Bertha Lum was highly influential in introducing audiences outside Asia to Japanese and Chinese woodblock prints. She became fascinated with woodblock prints during her honeymoon trip to Japan in 1903, returning in 1907 and later to study printmaking. She learned to carve and print her own blocks, and began exhibiting in 1912 in Tokyo, showing internationally and winning prizes around the world. As a Western artist producing prints in the Japanese woodblock tradition, her works have a subtle elegance achieved through graceful line work and sophisticated color. Her woodblocks are highly collectible and sought after today.

Comments - Striking image of a beauty leaning over the edge of a well encircled by a dragon, with abstract vines and flowers trailing down from above. The sinuous repeated lines of the dragon's scales create a sense of movement, as if the creature is rising up from below. A fantastic design with a very elegant, art nouveau sensibility. Pencil signed within image at lower edge, with "Copyright - 1927 BL" in pencil in the bottom margin. A classic Bertha Lum design.
