Series; Famous Places of the Tokyo Enlightenment

Oji Inari Shrine and Magic Fox - Fantastic design from collaborative series by various artists depicting scenes around Tokyo. At left, Kyosai shows foxes cavorting at Oji Inari Shrine, where they are said to gather on New Year's Eve. Some are dressed in human clothes, including a couple in Western attire with the female wearing a hoop skirt made from straw mats and the male sporting a top hat. In the foreground, a fox dances about holding seaweed next to his ears like long hair. Red foxfires, a sign of a supernatural occurrence, dance about the scene. At upper right, Kunichika depicts a kabuki actor in the role of a magic fox disguised as the samurai Tadanobu, wearing a beautifully embossed white fur robe and balancing a hand drum atop his shoulder. Below, another artist shows a waitress serving a meal to a beauty on a verandah. A great image with wonderful color and detail.
