Five Chivalrous Commoners and Sake Casks

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych showing five chivalrous commoners, otokodate or "street knights" who protected local people from outlaw samurai. They are dressed in an impressive array of striking kimono. The man in the center wears a robe with giant herons on a blue background. The robe on the fellow at left features a kite in the shape of a man. Each man is armed with a single sword and a shakuhachi flute. Straw-wrapped casks of sake are stacked behind them, each barrel printed with a seal and brand name. A wonderful, colorful 5 panel kabuki subject. A great choice to collect or display.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 48 3/4" x 13 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Five separate panels. Some stains and wrinkles. Some light rubbing and soiling. A couple creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
