Asakusa-Kinryuzan

Series; Famous Views of Modern Tokyo, 1875

Asakusa-Kinryuzan - Intriguing design from a collaborative series by Kyosai and Kunichika depicting modern Tokyo scenes. In the top image, Kunichika shows the kabuki actor Onoe Kikugoro V as a tennin or heavenly being. She floats in midair smiling sweetly, a red sash fluttering around her and the large paper lantern of Asakusa Temple at lower right. The bottom design by Kyosai shows Kato Kiyomasa dressed in Western clothing and sitting in a chair, ordering his tigers to get rid of their weapons and armor. Kiyomasa wears a green top hat and a long black coat over a button front shirt and striped trousers, gesturing with his hand as he yells angrily. At left, a sad tiger trudges away with a pile of armor and robes tied to his back, carrying a bow, a dead snake wrapped about his waist as a belt. Behind him, another retainer wipes tears from his eye. A fascinating comic design, drawn with lively line work and bright color. The image appears on page 41 of Amy Reigle Newland's recent book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master, Toyoharu Kunichika."
