Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Reading a Proclamation, 1878

Comments - Interesting scene of an army officer at left reading a proclamation to a group of fellow officers. Beside the officer, a row of ladies-in-waiting hold long handled sake servers to pour libations for the men as they approach the reader. The soldiers wear black uniforms adorned with striped sashes and fringed epaulets, some of the sitting on plush chairs at right. The room opens onto a view of assembled troops, with blossoming plum trees framing the sky. A handsome design with burnishing in the uniforms.

Artist - Meiji era artist (not read)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Small hole, tear at edge, repaired. Slight toning, creasing, and soiling, slight ink offsetting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
