Riding in Ferries, 1839

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of passengers riding in two ferries. At left, a standing man holds an umbrella while a commoner sits on a chest before him, the young beside them waving his hands with a worried expression. A puppeteer looks up from beneath a cloth draped over his head, a wooden box holding his puppets hanging from his neck. At right, the boatman looks up with a grimace as he poles the craft along, a yamabushi or mountain monk sitting next to him. Snow blankets the bottom of the boats and covers the buildings along the opposite shore. The left panels include Ichimura Uzaemon XII, Bando Hikosaburo IV, and Ichikawa Shinnosuke II. The right panel features Arashi Kichisaburo III as the boatman and Arashi Isaburo I as the yamabushi. A handsome design with expressive figures.
