From a Kuniyoshi Estate Collection

Yoshinaka's Farewell Parade before Going to War with the Taira, circa 1842 - 1843 - Handsome scene of Yoshinaka saying farewell before going off to battle the Taira in 1180. He stands on the verandah at right dressed in full armor and a horned battle helmet, gesturing with his battle fan. At left, the woman warrior Tomoe Gozen sits astride her black horse, her chest plate and cloak bearing her inverted three-comma crest. She wears a tall black court cap over her long black hair. In the center, a groom holds the reins of a lively dappled horse with retainers kneeling and standing nearby. A pine tree frames the view at right, and tent walls with the Minamoto's paulownia crest wrap around the enclosure. A handsome design with wonderful detail in the armor and expressive figures.
