Wicked Magician and Giant Rat, 1849

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Date Zensei Sakura no Iromaku" depicting the wicked magician Nikki Danjo, returning to human form after changing himself into a giant rat in order to steal an incriminating scroll. He appears at left dressed in a gray kamishimo with a white geometric print, the long pants trailing beneath his feet. At right, the loyal samurai Otokonosuke steps on the neck of the giant rat, the scroll still in its mouth, raising his fan above his head to strike the creature. From left, the actors are Matsumoto Kinsho I and Iwai Kumesaburo III. A handsome design from this famous drama, nicely detailed with bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 19 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
