Lady Nii, No. 37 - Attractive scene of the Lady Nii, the daughter of governor of Iga Province, paying a visit to the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. Her mother and the courtier Hino Suketoshi accompanied her on the trip. One night during a moon viewing banquet, Suketoshi accidentally exchanged sake cups with the young woman, which led to an exchange of poetry between the pair. Here the courtier peeks shyly around the corner of a porch, watching the beautiful Lady Nii. She is dressed in formal court attire, with a delicately embossed white kimono tucked into red hakama pants, and a fine blue outer robe with circular floral motifs and a gold netted pattern. She holds a fan decorated with colorful trailing ribbons, and a blossoming cherry tree stands in the palace courtyard. The image above shows Suketoshi visiting Lady Nii's home in Iga Province during the winter.
