The Loyal Retainers at Ryogoku Bridge after Achieving Revenge, 1884

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the famous tale of the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the ronin returning victorious from the night attack on Moronao's castle, attempting to cross Ryogoku Bridge. As the sun begins to rise, the leader of the ronin, Yuranosuke, is stopped by the hatamoto Hattori Ichiro, who is mounted on horseback and carrying a spear. He forbids them from passing into his master's province, so the warriors were forced to cross the river by the Eitai Bridge instead. At bottom center, Yuransuke looks up with a slight frown, carrying his battle helmet as the official glares down at him. The actors include Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Yuranosuke and Ichikawa Sadanji I as Hattori Ichiro. An interesting subject with nice large colorful figures
