Ichikawa Sansho V as Umeomaru, 1953 - Terrific shin-hanga kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sansho V as the ronin Umeomaru in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," a tale based on the life of the great scholar and nobleman Sugawara no Michizane. While traveling and wearing a large woven hat to conceal his identity, accidentally bumps into his brother. Here, he lifts his hat, slowly recognizing his relative. He looks down intently, scowling slightly, his red stage makeup and flared wig giving him an imposing appearance. He wears a boldly checked kimono over a red robe patterned with his namesake "ume" or plum blossoms. A dramatic design with bold graphic appeal, nicely detailed with embossing in the white flowers.
