Confrontation beside a Well

Comments - Interesting nighttime scene of a confrontation beside a well next to a stone wall. In the center, the samurai Inada Kozo ties a white sash around his upper arm. He uses his teeth to pull one end tight while resting on his knee, his swords at this side. At right, a samurai holds up a lantern as he scowls angrily, his feet firmly spread apart. At left, the lovers Seki no Koman and the packhorse driver Tanba no Yosaku watch as they share an umbrella. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Shinsha I, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, Nakamura Shikan IV, and unidentified. An atmospheric scene with a handsome setting, detailed with burnishing in the black robe.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 29 3/8" + margins as shown
