Ushiwakamaru Serenading Joruri, 1865

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the young nobleman Ushiwakamaru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune) standing outside the garden gate of the lovely Princess Joruri, serenading the beauty on his flute. He wears a green tunic patterned with the paulownia symbol of the Minamoto Clan over a red kimono tucked into hakama pants bordered with a red temple fence and pine trees. The beauty smiles as she looks up from playing the koto. Ushiwakamaru's footman kneels at left with a lantern in his hand, watching warily. A blossoming cherry tree frames the evening sky above a brushwood fence. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo III, Nakamura Fukusuke II, and Sawamura Tanosuke. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.
