Fierce Fighting at Pyongyang, 1894

Comments - Dramatic depiction of fierce fighting at Pyongyang during the Sino-Japanese War. In the center, a Japanese soldier on horseback grabs hold of an enemy on his mount. Below, a wounded Chinese bugler lies on the ground, his bugle, flag, cap, and drum scattered around him. At left, the Japanese have captured a stone entrance gate, raising flags from the upper story. Fighting continues along a wooden bridge leading to the shore at right, where a fortress is engulfed in red and orange flames and smoke. An action-filled scene, detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and fine bokashi shading in the night sky.
