Scene from the 47 Ronin; Man Reading a Letter - Intriguing double-sided kabuki print with a triptych by Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) on one side and another by Chikashige on the reverse. The Kunisada III print features a scene from the 47 ronin, with Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, in the countryside in autumn, holding a fan and wearing a purple coat. The samurai at left frowns angrily, while the warrior at right lifts his hat for a closer look, looking at his companion suspiciously. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black coat at left, and a burnished patter in the black coat at right. On the back, Chikashige shows a man looking up from reading a letter, surrounded by angrily nobleman. A simulated black lacquer frame borders the image. Detailed with burnishing in the black court cap and a burnished pattern in the black kimono at left. An interesting and unusual format, the prints nicely colored and detailed.
