Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Togashi Saemon, 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in the role of Lord Togashi Saemon Masahiro in the play "Kanjincho" (The Subscription List). The nobleman was charged with intercepting Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men as they tried to sneak across the Ataka border disguised as monks. Here, he raises his fan above his head as he stares to the side with a stern expression while interrogating the group. He wears a blue kamishimo patterned with cranes in flight over an orange kimono featuring medallions and a geometric print. His tall black court cap features a subtle burnished pattern, and fastens under his chin with a blue tassels cord. Bamboo fills the background. A great design, nicely composed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small wormholes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
