Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Famous Patriots of the Nation, 1876

Comments - Handsome group portrait featuring famous patriots of Japan. At top center, a nobleman fingers his fan as he looks down with a sober expression. He wears a black robe with a beautiful burnished scroll pattern and a tall black court cap. A monk or priest sits beside him in profile. Just below, an elderly warrior with a white beard and hair perches on a folding stool, wearing a vest over a fine suit of armor. There is only one woman amongst the group, who kneels at lower right with a folding fan in her lap. Nice expressive figures with vibrant color, set off by the deep blue background. Includes additional burnishing in some of the armor and clothing. We've never come across this subject before.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, partially backed with paper. Slight separation at ends of vertical folds, small thinning spot, a couple small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
