The Battle of Ouchi, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Incredible triptych from the Battle of Ouchi showing troops attacking a fortress held by the Ouchi Clan during the Meitoku Rebellion of 1391. Carrying spears and red lanterns with the white paulownia mon or crest of the Minamoto, warriors clamber along the walls of the castle complex, climbing a ladder in the center to reach the next level, forming a ring around the perimeter. Inside, the palace is on fire, with flame and smoke pouring from the tower at left. Smoke billows across the gray night sky, red hot embers dotting the lighter clouds. A fantastic panoramic view of a castle under siege. Terrific architectural detail in the setting and a wonderful depiction of the terrible fire. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great choice for a samurai enthusiast.
