Waiting for the Rain to End

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of travelers seeking shelter from the rain under a tree in front of a large entrance gate. A wandering monk called a komuso stands at left, lifting his tall basket hat and holding a shakuhachi flute, while another monk kneels in front of him, smoking a slender pipe. A dancer wearing a lion costume waits impatiently behind him, resting his chin on his hands. A female pilgrim crouches at center, smiling as she looks up. She wears a white pilgrim's vest and has a string of prayer beads around her neck. At right, a samurai carries a young boy on his back, a hand drum over the child's shoulder, with a blind man at upper right. Gray raindrops slant across the scene. A great design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
