Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Conquest of Korea, 1866 - Terrific triptych depicting the late 16th century conquest of Korea led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The great unifier of Japan is shown taking on multiple enemies at once, simultaneously grabbing one around the neck, stepping on a second, and lifting a third high over his head single-handedly. An enraged Korean warrior lunges at him, gripping an enormous ax, his mouth open and eyes wide, his hair blowing back wildly from his face. At far left, a samurai on horseback uses his spear against another Korean enemy, knocking him to the ground. A waterfall rushes from the rocky cliff behind them, flowing in torrents over the mountainside, the water bordered with blossoming peonies. A fantastic depiction of this historical event, with a dramatic natural setting and finely detailed, expressive figures. A great early Yoshitoshi design, and a beautiful, clean crisp print.
