Shibata Zeshin - Born in Edo, Shibata Zeshin was originally apprenticed to a lacquerer, and studied painting with Shijo School artist Suzuki Nanrei as a foundation. Zeshin was well known for his lacquer work, but he was also an exceptional calligrapher. These woodblock prints feature his fluid line work and bold strokes, demonstrating his mastery of this technique. Each includes a verse or verses with a small scene below. We seldom come across prints by Zeshin.
