Ichikawa Sadanji as a Man Doing Penance, 1873

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sadanji as a young man doing penance by pouring a buck of cold well water over his head. He grimaces as the water rushes over his shoulders, dressed in a blue and white cotton kimono tied with a red tie-dyed sash. His hair is tied back with a dotted, cloth, a few wet locks framing his face. At upper left a gohei, a wooden wand used in Shinto purification rituals floats on a mass of swirling clouds. An intriguing subject, nicely composed and detailed with delicate embossing in the kimono and dotted cloth.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 9"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small hole at edge, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, creasing, and rubbing, a few spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
