Musashi Koman of Shimbashi and the Warrior Yorimasa

Series; Six Poems of Love and Valor, 1879

Musashi Koman of Shimbashi and the Warrior Yorimasa - Lovely portrait of Musashi Koman of Shimbashi holding several stalks of blossoming purple irises. She smiles happily as she tugs up the sleeve of her blue floral print kimono. She wears a ring with a red stone, and her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with a few hairpins and a tie-dyed ribbon. The inset above shows the samurai Yorimasa, looking up at a crescent moon high in the night sky as he awaits the arrival of the nue, a horrible monster that had been attacking the Imperial Palace at night and tormenting the emperor. A bow and quiver of arrows rest on the ground nearby, and Yorimasa will shoot and kill the creature when he sees it. Beautiful fine line work in the hair. A handsome design from a rarely seen Yoshitoshi series.
