Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Righteousness: Nawa Nagao, 1892

Series; A New Selection of the Mirror of Honor

Righteousness: Nawa Nagao, 1892 - Fantastic triptych of the lone samurai Nawa Nagao fending off a hail of arrows with his sword. He has stripped off his armor, which lays in a pile on the ground next to him. Enemy archers are silhouetted against the dark sky in the upper right, an army behind them. In the text block, this print bears the kanji for righteousness or justice, a virtue found both in the Five Confucian Virtues and the Seven Virtues of the Code of Bushido. A dramatic samurai image that would make a great addition to any collection, beautifully detailed with fine bokashi shading and touches of lacquer on the armor.
